Precedent & Statutory Rationale

1. Transition from State University to Central University Status:

o Prior to 2007, Tripura University functioned as a state-level university established under the Tripura University Act, 1987 (Tripura Act 11 of 1987).

o To bolster higher educational infrastructure, elevate academic standards, secure robust central funding through the University Grants Commission (UGC), and expand higher education opportunities in the northeastern region, a central parliamentary enactment became necessary.

2. Enhancement of Regional Higher Education:

o The legislation was formulated to upgrade Tripura University into a premier Central University, granting it broader statutory powers for teaching, research, institutional affiliation, and specialized academic outreach tailored to the development needs of the region.
